ILC NewsLine
Research Director's Report
ILC NewsLine presents a new column from the Research Director Sakue Yamada.
A novel challenge

Sakue Yamada
The invitation to become the newly created research director for the International Linear Collider detector design was a surprise. I have always been aware that an electron positron collider is a powerful tool for particle physics. I started my career in high energy physics in this field, and I enjoyed many exciting years. I also participated in various discussions about a future linear collider project. But that was a long time ago. In recent years, I watched from the sidelines and followed the international efforts organised to design a linear collider under the leadership of the Global Design Effort. After discussions with the ILC Steering Committee and several key physicists, I learned how far things have developed and why they introduced a Research Director.

Getting to know you -
Research Director Sakue Yamada

Yamada is a flutist and used to play Bach sonatas with Albrecht Wagner and Dieter Haidt during his time at DESY.
“My direct work with Sakue goes back to the early 80s. I was a PhD student at the PETRA electron-positron storage ring at DESY,” says Karlheinz Meier, Professor of the University of Heidelberg. He is also a member of the International Linear Collider Steering Committee, and he chaired the sub-committee to nominate the newly appointed Research Director Sakue Yamada.

Feature Story
Sakue Yamada to lead International Linear Collider detector design
Tokyo, Japan -- The International Linear Collider Steering Committee (ILCSC), a sub-panel of the International Committee for Future Accelerators (ICFA), has appointed Sakue Yamada, Professor Emeritus of University of Tokyo, to become the research director for the International Linear Collider, a proposed future particle accelerator.

Yamada will report to the ILCSC and will be responsible for the experimental programme of the ILC. An international endeavour, the ILC published a Reference Design Report in August 2007 and now enters an engineering design phase that will last through 2010. Yamada’s appointment will last through this engineering phase, at which time the ILC will be ready for formal presentation to international funding agencies and other governing bodies.

Building the future of physics
...That mega-machine, known as the International Linear Collider, won't become a reality until well after 2012. But lots of experts are already working on the ILC's design - and how to pay for it - because it takes years to go from one generation of supercollider to the next.

New detector leadership for
the ILC

Four detector concepts are presented in the ILC Reference Design Report
We are dedicating this special issue of ILC NewsLine to the appointment of the new ILC Research Director, Sakue Yamada of KEK Laboratory and the University of Tokyo. The International Linear Collider Steering Committee (ILCSC) has created this important position to provide guidance for the global detector R&D activities and coordination of the procedures for developing engineering designs for two complementary detectors. On behalf of the GDE, I enthusiastically welcome Sakue to our joint efforts. We anticipate working very closely together to move the ILC accelerator engineering design and detector efforts forward in concert.
